Stephenson Law and Amdaris create a data-driven platform to provide legal advice to technology startups with ease

  • The award-winning technology eliminates the middleman through straightforward legal advice

Bristol, Great Britain; October 5, 2021: Progressive law firm Stephenson Law has partnered with Bristol-based software developer and digital transformation specialist Amdaris to create an innovative platform that provides straightforward legal advice to train tech startups in a modern, digitized way.

The ongoing project, known as Puffin, uses expert data insights to provide automated legal advice on issues from early-stage startups and other businesses by reviewing and considering legal intelligence stored in an ever-growing knowledge base. Within Stephenson Law’s sister company Flamenco, the overall goal is to create a platform that uses intelligent technology to provide specific, affordable, and accessible legal advice, rather than providing standard pre-set answers to questions or the expensive advice of an attorney for lawyer relatively simple legal issues.

The platform is a cognitive system that provides personalized answers as opposed to a standard Google search and response. Despite its automated nature, the advice provided is initially overseen and signed off by the Stephenson Law team before it is issued. The human-centered, semi-automatic chatbot offers legal advice obtained from information from a machine learning setup.

The puffin project was successfully selected as one of the winners in last year’s Innovate UK competition in order to raise the funds necessary to make the project a reality. Flamenco in combination with the Puffin project was also named Disruptive Technology of the Year at the Legal Innovation Awards 2021.

Creativity and collaboration

Founded in 2017 by Alice Stephenson, Stephenson Law was formed after discovering a niche in the market for an all-encompassing, progressive, people-centered law firm with a focus on technology clients. After serving high-growth scale-up tech clients for several years, headquartered in Bristol, realizing the startup community was underserved, she founded her sister company Flamenco in 2021 before joining the Puffin project.

Amdaris, who works with Stephenson Law to provide industry expertise for the development of Puffin, provides software development, digital transformation and managed services to large and small businesses around the world in addition to building the data sets for the platform. Amdaris was founded in 2009 and today has offices in five countries including the UK, Moldova, Romania, Ukraine and the United Arab Emirates.

Andy Rogers, Co-CEO at Amdaris, commented, “Providing technology companies with the legal insight they need is an important task, and working with the Flamenco team to develop Puffin has been an exciting challenge for the Amdaris team. Our company’s goal is to enable digital transformation across all sectors, and this is a groundbreaking project that will transform the legal industry through data-driven insights and not only make the process more efficient but also personalize it. “

Ed Boal, Managing Director at Stephenson Law added, “As a law firm working with technology companies, it only seemed right to build our own technology platform to support our company’s mission to provide legal advice in a progressive and modern way. By breaking down barriers between clients and attorneys, Puffin is helping to transform the legal landscape towards diversity and inclusion by making legal advice more accessible to startups. We are very excited to be working with Amdaris on our Puffin project and believe that by working together we can work together to develop a tool that will make legal processes for tech startups as smooth and simple as possible so they don’t get involved You have to rely on it at your own discretion when it comes to searching for legal questions on the Internet. “
