Orono, Maine – University of Maine Junior Anna Simone was named a 2021-22 America East Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete, the league announced Thursday, April 28.
The 2021-22 Scholar Athletes were members of teams in the six championship sports America East sponsored during the winter season, including men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, and men’s and women’s track and field. Nominees were proposed by their institution, which could nominate up to one student-athlete per sport, which was then voted on by the conference’s Student-Athlete Engagement Committee. Each America East Scholar athlete was a prospective starter or prominent reserve and has a cumulative GPA of at least 3.50.
Simon, who has a 3.83 grade point average in psychology, was named to the 2021-22 America East All-Academic Team. On the field, Simon became only the fifth player in America East history to be named the league’s Player and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season after leading the league in scoring (16.0) and steals per game (2, 8) cited.
Sport Scholar athletes are automatically eligible for the America East Female or Male Scholar Athlete of the Year awards, which will be announced in July.
