This time, the political parties have fielded several educated candidates making their debut in the electoral arena. They say it’s an opportunity for them to develop the state, change people’s perceptions of politics, and root out corruption.

Ranvir Kaur Mian (31), the congressional candidate from Budhlada in Mansa district, is the most educated candidate. She holds a PhD in English and two MBA degrees in finance and human resources. She also has an M Ed and has worked as a lecturer at a private university.

Ranvir Kaur told The Tribune: “I want to open new avenues for higher education in Budhlada, which is educationally backward.”

“A weak education system is a curse for the state. Drugs and unemployment are rampant. If the voters gave me a chance, I would bring good educational institutes and try to create employment opportunities – these are the basic demands of the people,” she said.

During the campaign, Ranvir Kaur emphasizes women’s empowerment. She appeals to female voters to exercise their right to vote on February 20 so that women’s issues can be given priority. “If I get the mandate, I want to lead and guide the rural women to self-determination,” she added.

Another career starter, Malvika Sood Sachar (38), is a software engineer. She is the sister of actor Sonu Sood. Congress set them up from Moga.

Sandeep Jakhar, 45, nephew of former State Congress President Sunil Jakhar, is venturing into the elections from the family home of Abohar. He is a graduate of Mayo College, Ajmer, and Florida International University, USA.

AAP Dakha candidate KNS Kang has a PhD from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), while Sangrur nominee Narinder Kaur Bharaj, 27, has a law degree. She also has MA from Punjabi University, Patiala.

Paramjit Singh, SAD-BSP candidate from Samrala, holds a Master’s degree in International Business from the University of Greenwich, England.

Ludhiana West Bikram Sidhu’s BJP candidate has also mentioned his LLB qualification. He also has M Sc (mathematics).
